P0443: OBD-II code P0443 flags an electrical fault in the EVAP purge control valve circuit — the PCM can't purge fuel vapours from the charcoal canister.

LowPowertrainEmissions

Symptoms

  • Check engine light is on; the engine may occasionally stumble at idle or during warm-up.
  • Fuel odour around the vehicle, especially after refuelling if the purge cycle stops working.
  • The vehicle will fail an OBD-II emissions test until the EVAP monitor completes and reports ready.

Common causes

  • A failed purge control valve solenoid with an open or shorted internal coil.
  • Damaged wiring or a corroded connector at the purge valve, often mounted near the intake manifold.
  • A blown fuse feeding the EVAP purge circuit or a corroded ground point on the valve harness.

What to do?

Command the purge valve open with a scan tool while listening for its click. Measure the coil resistance (typically 20-30 Ω). Check for power and ground at the connector. Replace the valve or repair wiring as needed, then clear the code and retest the EVAP monitor.
