• A previous incident where the driver decelerated hard using engine braking or downshifting without touching the brake pedal.
• Any prior cause of C1291 (worn contacts, misadjusted switch, damaged wiring) that has cleared but may recur.

Diagnose exactly as for C1291 — test brake lamp switch continuity, verify brake lights work, and check switch adjustment. Since this is a history code, replace the switch proactively if it feels marginal, then clear the code and monitor for return.
