C1242: OBD-II code C1242 flags an open ABS pump motor circuit — the EBCM can't drive the pump because the motor windings or drive wiring are broken.

HighChassisAnti-Lock Brakes (ABS)

Symptoms

  • ABS, traction control, and stability control warning lamps illuminate together and stay on continuously.
  • The ABS pump motor does not run during self-tests or during a wheel-lock event, so ABS interventions are unavailable.
  • Standard hydraulic braking still works but anti-lock functionality is completely disabled.

Common causes

  • An internally open ABS pump motor winding — the motor itself has failed and requires BPMV replacement on most vehicles.
  • A broken or disconnected wire between the EBCM and the pump motor, or a corroded or loose motor connector.
  • A failed EBCM internal pump driver that no longer completes the circuit to the motor windings.

What to do?

Disconnect the ABS pump motor connector and measure resistance across the motor terminals with a DMM — pump motors typically read a few ohms when good, infinite Ω means an open winding. Verify EBCM-side voltage at the motor connector during a bi-directional pump-motor command. If the motor is open, replace the BPMV/pump assembly; if the wiring is open, repair it.
