C1297: OBD-II code C1297 flags that the PCM has detected a failure in the brake extended-travel switch — the pedal position sensor for cruise control and brake assist.

MediumChassisBrake System

Symptoms

  • ABS, traction control, and stability control warning lamps may illuminate together, along with a stored PCM code.
  • Cruise control may refuse to engage or disengage inappropriately because the pedal position input is unreliable.
  • Brake assist and hill-hold features can behave unpredictably; standard hydraulic braking is unaffected.

Common causes

  • A failed brake extended-travel switch (secondary brake switch) with worn contacts or a stuck plunger.
  • Damaged or corroded wiring at the brake pedal switch connector affecting the switch signal.
  • A misadjusted switch bracket that lets the plunger drift out of proper contact with the pedal arm.

What to do?

Test the brake extended-travel switch for continuity in both states — released and pressed. Verify the switch is properly aligned with the pedal arm. Replace the switch if it fails the continuity test, or adjust its bracket to spec. Clear codes and retest cruise control.
