C1288: OBD-II code C1288 flags an electrical fault in the steering angle sensor circuit — the EBCM sees an open, shorted, or missing sensor signal.

MediumChassisStability Control (VSES)

Symptoms

  • ABS and stability control warning lamps illuminate together and remain on continuously after start.
  • Stability control interventions are disabled because the EBCM has no valid steering-angle reference to work from.
  • Standard driving feels normal; the fault is only apparent in scan data or via the illuminated ESC lamp.

Common causes

  • A failed steering angle sensor with an open or shorted internal signal path.
  • Damaged sensor wiring in the steering column or a corroded connector at the clockspring or column base.
  • A failed EBCM sensor input driver that no longer processes the steering-angle signal correctly.

What to do?

Confirm the sensor has power and ground with a DMM. Read live steering-angle data — an open circuit typically shows as no signal or a fixed default value. Inspect the harness through the column for chafing. Replace the sensor and recalibrate if it has failed, or repair wiring as needed.
