Honda and Acura Diagnostics: Read and Clear Fault Codes with Carista

With the latest Carista product update, compatible Honda and Acura owners can use the Carista scanner and Carista App to read and clear DTCs from supported vehicle systems.

The initial release includes diagnostic access to:

Engine diagnostics

Read engine-related DTCs associated with the check engine light and other powertrain faults.

Engine codes can point toward problems involving misfires, sensors, fueling, emissions systems and other engine-management components.

For example, Honda has previously issued service guidance for certain 2008–2012 Accord V6 models in which misfires could store codes including P0301, P0302, P0303 and P0304 and illuminate the malfunction indicator light.

Being able to retrieve the actual DTC gives you significantly more information than the warning light alone.

Carista can also access supported Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) diagnostics.

Acura, for example, issued a safety recall for certain 2023 RDX vehicles involving the Vehicle Stability Assist modulator, illustrating why brake-system warnings and proper diagnosis should not be ignored.

Airbag and SRS diagnostics

A standard generic OBD2 reader is often focused primarily on engine-related emissions codes.

Carista’s new Honda and Acura support goes further by accessing supported airbag and Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) fault codes.

HVAC diagnostics

The release also includes supported diagnostics for the heating, ventilation and air-conditioning system (HVAC).

If the climate-control system detects an electronic fault, accessing its diagnostic module may reveal stored information that a basic engine-only OBD2 scanner would never display.

Common Honda engine problems where diagnostics can help

Misfires and rough running

Engine misfires are among the situations in which diagnostic codes can be particularly useful.

A driver might experience:

• Rough idle
• Hesitation
• Reduced power
• Engine vibration
• Flashing or steady check engine light

Codes such as P0300 or cylinder-specific codes such as P0301–P0304 can indicate that the engine computer has detected a misfire.

Honda has documented misfire-related issues on certain older V6 models, including the 2008–2012 Accord V6, where piston-ring and spark-plug fouling could cause cylinder-specific misfire DTCs.

Honda 1.5T oil-dilution concerns

Oil dilution has been a widely discussed issue among owners of some Honda 1.5-liter turbo vehicles.

Honda’s 2019 documentation specifically addressed certain 2016–2018 Civic and 2017–2018 CR-V vehicles and noted that oil-dilution-related drivability problems could be accompanied by codes such as P0300–P0304 or P0172.

For an owner, the important distinction is this:
