C1294: OBD-II code C1294 flags a brake lamp switch circuit that is always active — the EBCM sees the brake applied continuously, even when the pedal is released.

MediumChassisBrake System

Symptoms

  • The brake lights may stay on continuously with the ignition on, even when the driver is not touching the pedal.
  • Cruise control may refuse to engage because the vehicle thinks the driver is braking.
  • Traction control and stability interventions may behave unpredictably because the EBCM believes the driver is on the brakes.

Common causes

  • A brake lamp switch stuck in the closed position, often from a damaged plunger or a broken pedal bumper (rubber stopper) letting the pedal sit low.
  • A short-to-voltage in the brake switch wiring between the switch and the EBCM.
  • A missing or crumbled brake pedal bumper allowing the pedal to rest slightly depressed, closing the switch.

What to do?

Inspect the pedal bumper and the switch plunger geometry — replace a crumbled bumper (a common inexpensive fix). Test switch continuity with the pedal fully released. Verify wiring is not shorted to voltage. Replace the switch if it is stuck closed.
