P0336: OBD-II code P0336 flags an implausible crankshaft position sensor signal — the pattern doesn't match expected engine rotation.

HighPowertrainEngine/Powertrain

Symptoms

  • Check engine light is on; engine may crank but not start, or stall unexpectedly while driving.
  • Rough running, hesitation, and misfire codes may accompany P0336 as the PCM loses its timing reference.
  • The engine may restart after a delay, then continue to stall intermittently as the sensor fails.

Common causes

  • A failed crankshaft position sensor with intermittent signal dropouts — common after high heat cycling.
  • A damaged reluctor wheel or tone ring on the crankshaft producing missing or extra pulses.
  • Damaged wiring or a corroded connector at the crank sensor, often near the transmission bellhousing.

What to do?

Read live engine RPM at cranking and idle — the signal should be steady, not dropping out. Inspect the sensor connector and wiring. Replace the crank sensor if intermittent (very common on many engines). Inspect the reluctor wheel visually if a sensor replacement doesn't clear the code.
