P0014: Exhaust Camshaft Timing Over-Advanced (Bank 1)

Symptoms

  • Rough or unstable idle
  • Reduced engine power
  • Poor fuel economy
  • Occasional hard starts

Common causes

  • Faulty VVT (variable valve timing) solenoid
  • Low or dirty engine oil restricting solenoid flow
  • Stretched timing chain
  • Wiring or connector issue at the solenoid
  • Worn camshaft phaser

What to do?

Start with an oil and filter change using the manufacturer's specified viscosity - sludge and wrong-weight oil cause many P0014 cases. If the code persists, test the VVT solenoid and inspect for chain stretch. Do not ignore this code; severe over-advance can damage valves.
