C1283: OBD-II code C1283 flags that the steering angle sensor is taking too long to return to centre after a turn — the sensor or its zero point is suspect.

Symptoms

• ABS and stability control warning lamps illuminate; the code sets after several turning events during a drive cycle.
• Stability control interventions may be disabled or delayed because the EBCM can't trust the steering-angle input.
• Standard driving feels normal; the fault is only apparent in scan data or when the ESC lamp is on.

Common causes

• A steering angle sensor that has lost its calibration and no longer returns to zero when the steering wheel is centred.
• Wheel alignment out of specification pulling the wheel off centre and biasing the sensor's return-to-zero.
• A failing sensor with internal wear producing a signal that is delayed or non-linear on return to centre.

What to do?

Confirm the front wheels are pointing straight ahead and the steering wheel is centred. Perform the steering-angle sensor zero-point calibration with a scan tool. Verify wheel alignment. If the code returns after calibration, replace the steering-angle sensor and recalibrate.
