P0524: OBD-II code P0524 flags actual low engine oil pressure detected by the PCM — a critical warning that can indicate imminent engine damage.
HighPowertrainEngine/Powertrain
Symptoms
- Check engine light and often a low-oil-pressure warning lamp are illuminated together at start-up or under load.
- The engine may make ticking noises (top-end lifter noise) or knocking noises (bottom-end bearing wear).
- In severe cases the engine may enter reduced-power mode to protect from further damage.
Common causes
- Low engine oil level — always check first before assuming anything else is wrong.
- A worn oil pump not producing full pressure under load, or a stuck-open pressure relief valve.
- Excessive engine wear (main and rod bearings, cam journals) lowering pressure through clearance losses at operating temperature.
What to do?
**STOP driving the vehicle if oil pressure is genuinely low — engine damage is imminent.** Check oil level immediately. Verify pressure with a mechanical gauge before condemning parts. If pressure is truly low, do not run the engine until the cause is repaired.
