C1255: OBD-II code C1255 flags an internal failure inside the Electronic Brake Control Module (EBCM) — the module has failed its own diagnostic self-test.
HighChassisAnti-Lock Brakes (ABS)
Symptoms
- The ABS, traction control, and stability control warning lamps illuminate together and stay on continuously after every start.
- ABS, traction, and stability interventions are all disabled while the code is active; standard hydraulic braking is unaffected.
- The code cannot usually be cleared while the internal fault persists — it returns immediately after a scan-tool clear.
Common causes
- A genuine internal EBCM failure — the module has failed its self-test and needs replacement or a professional rebuild.
- A low or unstable battery voltage that repeatedly trips the module's internal watchdog into a fault state on start-up.
- A software corruption that in rare cases can be resolved with an EBCM reprogramming rather than a full replacement.
What to do?
Confirm battery voltage is 12.4 V+ at rest and 13.8-14.5 V running. If voltage is good and C1255 will not clear, the EBCM module has failed and needs replacement or rebuild by a specialist — the new module must be programmed and configured with the vehicle's VIN and options.
