P0701: OBD-II code P0701 flags a general performance fault in the transmission control system — the TCM detects data that doesn't correlate with expected shift behaviour.
HighPowertrainTransmission
Symptoms
- Check engine light is on; transmission may shift harshly, slip, or enter limp mode (stuck in one gear).
- Delayed engagement into drive or reverse, and unpredictable shifts.
- Companion TCM codes usually identify the specific underlying fault — P0701 alone is a wrapper.
Common causes
- Any active TCM code in the P07xx range affecting solenoids, speed sensors, or gear ratios.
- Low or contaminated transmission fluid affecting shift performance and solenoid response.
- A CAN bus fault between the TCM and the PCM disrupting shift coordination.
What to do?
Scan the TCM for its specific codes and address those first — P0701 is a downstream indicator. Check transmission fluid level and condition. P0701 clears automatically when the underlying fault is repaired.
