C1281: OBD-II code C1281 flags uncorrelated readings between Vehicle Stability Enhancement System (VSES) sensors — yaw, lateral accel, and steering angle disagree.

Symptoms

• ABS, traction control, and stability control lamps illuminate together and remain on continuously after start.
• Stability control interventions are disabled; the vehicle may feel less composed during aggressive cornering or evasive manoeuvres.
• Standard braking and ABS pedal feel are unaffected; the fault is limited to the electronic stability system.

Common causes

• A failed yaw rate sensor, lateral accelerometer, or steering angle sensor that disagrees with the other two beyond acceptable tolerance.
• An alignment or ride-height issue biasing the sensor cluster — for example after a suspension repair without recalibration.
• A calibration or initialisation issue after sensor or module replacement without proper zero-point learning.

What to do?

Compare live yaw, lateral accel, and steering angle values on a level surface — stationary readings should be near zero. Perform the vehicle's VSES sensor zero-point calibration with a scan tool. Replace whichever sensor is out of range. Verify wheel alignment and ride height after any suspension work.
