C1241: OBD-II code C1241 flags a fault in the variable-effort steering (VES/EVO) circuit — power steering assist becomes fixed rather than speed-sensitive.

MediumChassisVariable Effort Steering

Symptoms

  • The steering effort feels either too light at highway speeds or too heavy at parking speeds because the variable-assist function is disabled.
  • The ABS warning lamp may illuminate on some models because the VES solenoid is controlled by the EBCM alongside brake functions.
  • There is no change in braking behaviour — the fault is specifically in the electronic steering assist circuit.

Common causes

  • A failed variable-effort steering solenoid on the power steering pump or rack, which normally modulates hydraulic assist based on vehicle speed.
  • Damaged wiring between the EBCM or BCM and the VES solenoid, or a corroded connector at the solenoid causing an open or intermittent circuit.
  • An internal EBCM driver failure (less common) that prevents the module from correctly modulating the solenoid duty cycle.

What to do?

Locate the variable-effort steering solenoid on the power steering pump or rack. Measure the solenoid resistance with a DMM — most read around 2-6 Ω when good. Check the wiring between the EBCM and the solenoid for continuity and shorts. Replace the solenoid if it is out of spec, or repair wiring. Clear the code and drive at varying speeds to confirm variable assist is restored.
