P0133: OBD-II code P0133 means the upstream O2 sensor on bank 1 is responding too slowly — the sensor is ageing and can no longer switch fast enough for accurate fuel trim.

MediumPowertrainEmissions

Symptoms

  • Check engine light is on; fuel economy drops slightly as trim response degrades.
  • Slight loss of throttle crispness and less accurate closed-loop fuelling under variable load.
  • The vehicle may fail an emissions test as O2 response time is monitored during the drive cycle.

Common causes

  • An ageing or contaminated O2 sensor whose response has slowed with mileage and heat cycles.
  • Silicone from wrong sealants, coolant leaks, or oil burning past the rings coating the sensor tip.
  • A partially clogged catalytic converter creating exhaust backpressure and slowing sensor response.

What to do?

Read live O2 voltage during light throttle — a healthy sensor switches 1-2 times per second at idle. If sluggish, replace the sensor with an OE-spec unit. Address any oil-burning or coolant leaks that shortened its life to prevent recurrence.
