P0088: OBD-II code P0088 means the fuel rail pressure is above what the PCM commanded — usually a stuck fuel pressure regulator or a shorted regulator solenoid.

HighPowertrainFuel System

Symptoms

  • The check engine light is illuminated and the engine may run rich, hesitate, or lose power under load.
  • Fuel economy drops noticeably and black exhaust smoke can appear during acceleration.
  • The vehicle may enter limp mode to protect injectors and fuel-system components from over-pressure damage.

Common causes

  • A stuck-closed fuel pressure regulator (FPR) that cannot bleed excess pressure back to the tank.
  • An electrically shorted or stuck fuel pressure regulator solenoid on GDI/common-rail systems.
  • A failed fuel rail pressure sensor reporting falsely high values to the PCM.

What to do?

Read live fuel rail pressure and command an idle bleed with a scan tool. If actual pressure exceeds commanded and the regulator solenoid doesn't respond, replace the regulator. Verify the pressure sensor with a mechanical gauge — a bad sensor mimics real over-pressure. Inspect injector seals and replace any that leak under high pressure.
