C1214: OBD-II code C1214 flags an open ABS system relay coil or contacts — the EBCM cannot power the ABS solenoids or pump motor until the relay is fixed.
Symptoms
- The ABS warning lamp illuminates along with the traction and stability control lamps, and some vehicles show a 'Service Brake System' message.
- Anti-lock braking is disabled and the ABS pump motor cannot run during self-tests or during a wheel-lock event.
- Standard braking is unaffected, but ABS interventions and traction control are completely unavailable while the code is active.
Common causes
- A failed or stuck ABS system relay is the most common cause — the coil is open or the internal contacts fail to close reliably.
- Corroded or bent pins in the relay socket, or a blown ABS main fuse in the underhood fuse box, will trigger the same code.
- Damaged wiring between the relay and the EBCM, or an internally failed EBCM relay driver, is a less common but possible cause.
What to do?
Locate the ABS system relay in the underhood fuse box (or integrated inside the EBCM on some vehicles) and swap it with an identical known-good relay, then rescan. Check the ABS main fuse and confirm battery voltage reaches the EBCM connector. If the relay, fuse, and wiring all test good, the EBCM's internal relay driver has likely failed and the module needs replacement or rebuild.
