Symptoms

• Check engine light is on; the vehicle may refuse to start (interpreted as not in park or neutral).
• The gear indicator on the dashboard may blink, display dashes, or show the wrong gear position.
• Reverse lights may not work at all, or come on in the wrong gear positions.

Common causes

• A failed or misadjusted transmission range sensor (PRNDL/neutral safety switch).
• Damaged wiring or a corroded connector at the sensor on the transmission body.
• A bent shift linkage causing the sensor to read the wrong gear position mechanically.

What to do?

Verify the physical shifter position corresponds to what the TCM sees in scan data. Adjust or replace the range sensor if the alignment is off. Inspect the shift linkage for damage or misalignment.
