P0455: Evaporative Emission Control System Gross Leak Detected

Symptoms

  • Check engine light
  • Faint fuel smell near the rear of the vehicle
  • Usually no driveability issues

Common causes

  • Loose, damaged, or missing fuel cap
  • Cracked or disconnected EVAP hose
  • Failed canister purge or vent valve
  • Cracked charcoal canister

What to do?

Start with the cheapest fix: remove and reseat the fuel cap, or replace it if the seal is worn. If the code returns, a smoke test of the EVAP system will quickly locate the leak. The system is sealed at very low pressure, so visual inspection alone often misses cracks.
