P0101: Mass Air Flow (MAF) Sensor Circuit Range/Performance

Symptoms

• Poor acceleration or hesitation
• Rough idle and stalling
• Reduced fuel economy
• Black smoke from the exhaust in some cases

Common causes

• Dirty MAF sensor element
• Vacuum or intake leak after the MAF
• Clogged or aftermarket air filter shedding fibers
• Faulty MAF sensor
• Damaged intake boot

What to do?

Replace the air filter and clean the MAF sensor with dedicated MAF cleaner (never carb or brake cleaner). Inspect the intake boot between the MAF and throttle body for tears. If the code returns with clean intake plumbing, replace the MAF.
