All fault codes

C1248: OBD-II code C1248 means the EBCM has commanded the red BRAKE lamp on — a serious brake fault (fluid, pressure, or hydraulic) exists on top of any ABS codes.

HighChassisBrake System

Symptoms

  • The red BRAKE warning lamp on the dashboard is illuminated (not the amber ABS lamp), signalling a serious brake system fault.
  • The brake pedal may feel soft, low, or spongy if brake fluid is low or hydraulic pressure has been lost.
  • ABS and stability control are usually disabled as well, but the primary concern is compromised hydraulic braking.

Common causes

  • Low brake fluid level in the master cylinder reservoir, most often from worn pads or a hydraulic leak somewhere in the system.
  • A stuck-on parking brake or a failed parking brake switch that reports the parking brake as applied when it isn't.
  • A hydraulic pressure imbalance detected by the brake pressure differential switch, indicating a leak in one hydraulic circuit.

What to do?

Do not drive the vehicle until the cause is identified. Check brake fluid level and inspect the entire hydraulic system for leaks. Verify the parking brake is fully released and its switch is functional. If fluid and pressure are normal, use a scan tool to read the EBCM's specific reason for commanding the red lamp on and address that.
