C1244: OBD-II code C1244 flags a fault in EBCM-to-PCM engine drag control communication — the EBCM cannot request torque changes to prevent wheel lockup on deceleration.
MediumChassisTraction Control
Symptoms
- ABS and traction control warning lamps illuminate, sometimes accompanied by a stored PCM communication code.
- Engine drag control (which briefly raises engine torque during hard deceleration to prevent rear wheel lockup) is disabled.
- Normal driving is largely unaffected, but hard braking on slippery surfaces may feel less stable than usual.
Common causes
- A CAN bus or Class 2 serial data communication fault between the EBCM and the PCM, preventing torque request messages from being received.
- A PCM that has rejected the EBCM's torque request or reported an internal failure in its engine drag control function.
- Damaged wiring on the serial data bus, a bad splice, or a failed module elsewhere on the bus that is disrupting communication.
What to do?
Scan every module on the vehicle for related communication codes — U-codes on the PCM usually pinpoint the bus fault. Check the serial data bus for proper resistance and confirm there are no shorts to ground or to voltage. Address PCM communication codes first, then clear C1244 and retest.
