All fault codes

C1243: OBD-II code C1243 means the EBCM commanded the ABS pump motor but it did not turn — the motor is mechanically stalled or seized in the BPMV.

HighChassisAnti-Lock Brakes (ABS)

Symptoms

  • ABS, traction control, and stability control lamps illuminate together and stay on continuously after ignition.
  • Nothing happens when the EBCM commands the pump motor during self-tests — no whir, no vibration at the BPMV.
  • Anti-lock and stability interventions are disabled while the fault is active; standard braking is unaffected.

Common causes

  • A seized ABS pump motor caused by internal corrosion, worn brushes, or brake fluid contamination inside the motor housing.
  • A mechanically locked BPMV pump piston, often from ingested debris or long-degraded brake fluid, that prevents rotation.
  • Loss of pump motor supply voltage right at the motor while the EBCM believes it is being driven — usually a bad relay or a broken wire.

What to do?

Command the pump motor with a bi-directional scan tool while probing motor voltage at the connector. If voltage is present but the motor doesn't spin, the motor or BPMV is stalled and the assembly needs replacement. Change brake fluid at the recommended interval on all vehicles to prevent internal corrosion of the pump.
