P0446: OBD-II code P0446 flags an electrical fault in the EVAP vent control valve circuit — the system can't seal the tank for leak-monitor testing.
LowPowertrainEmissions
Symptoms
- Check engine light is on; the engine typically drives normally with no drivability symptoms.
- Occasional fuel odour after refuelling if the vent valve stays stuck in the wrong position.
- The EVAP self-test cannot complete, so the vehicle will fail an OBD-II emissions inspection.
Common causes
- A failed vent solenoid (canister close valve) with an open or shorted coil.
- Contamination or debris in the vent valve mechanism, common on off-road vehicles or dusty environments.
- Damaged wiring or a corroded connector at the vent valve, usually located near the charcoal canister under the vehicle.
What to do?
Command the vent valve open and closed with a scan tool and listen for the click. Measure the coil resistance and check for power and ground. Clean or replace the vent valve; inspect the harness routing along the fuel tank for damage from road debris.
