C1658: OBD-II code C1658 flags a calibration fault in the RSS control module — the module has lost its calibration data or has never been calibrated for this vehicle.
LowChassisReal-Time Damping (RSS)
Symptoms
- The 'Service Ride Control' warning is displayed on the dashboard, often immediately after a replacement module has been installed.
- Adaptive damping is disabled and reverts to a default level on all four corners.
- The code appears after RSS module replacement, sensor replacement, or a scan-tool reset without proper follow-up calibration.
Common causes
- A newly installed RSS module that has not yet been calibrated to the vehicle's suspension and sensor cluster.
- Lost calibration data caused by a battery disconnect during a module reprogramming procedure.
- An incomplete calibration routine — for example if the vehicle was not level or the ignition was cycled mid-procedure.
What to do?
Park the vehicle on a level surface with a full tank and no unusual cargo. Follow the manufacturer's RSS calibration procedure with a capable scan tool. If calibration will not complete, verify all four position sensors read plausibly and repair any faulty sensor before retrying.
