P0496: Evaporative Emission (EVAP) System High Purge Flow

Symptoms

  • Check engine light
  • Rough idle that improves shortly after starting
  • Occasional stalling at idle
  • Faint fuel smell

Common causes

  • Stuck-open canister purge valve
  • Faulty vent solenoid letting too much vapor through
  • Leaking EVAP hoses
  • Faulty fuel tank pressure sensor

What to do?

Inspect the purge valve - if it does not seal properly, fuel vapor is being drawn into the intake constantly. Replace the purge solenoid if it leaks vacuum. A smoke test of the EVAP system rules out hose leaks as a contributing factor.
