P0316: OBD-II code P0316 flags a misfire during the first 1000 crankshaft revolutions after start — usually a cold-start ignition or fuel issue that stabilises once warm.
MediumPowertrainIgnition
Symptoms
- Check engine light is on; the engine feels rough for a few seconds after start-up, then smooths out as it warms.
- Occasional stumble or hesitation immediately after ignition, especially in cold or damp weather.
- The code may also flag a specific cylinder misfire code (P0301-P0312) alongside pointing to the exact cylinder.
Common causes
- Worn or fouled spark plugs that struggle to fire cleanly during cold-start conditions.
- Weak or intermittent ignition coils that only fail under cold, high-load start conditions.
- Low fuel pressure at start — a weak fuel pump prime or leaking injectors bleeding pressure down overnight.
What to do?
Check spark plugs first and replace if due. Test injector leak-down (fuel pressure should hold overnight). Verify start-up fuel pressure comes up quickly. Address any cylinder-specific misfire codes that accompany P0316 as they pinpoint the affected cylinder.
