P0011: OBD-II code P0011 means the intake camshaft on bank 1 is more advanced than the PCM commanded — usually a stuck VVT solenoid or oil flow issue at the cam phaser.

MediumPowertrainEngine/Timing

Symptoms

  • The check engine light is illuminated and the engine may run rough at idle, hesitate under acceleration, or lose power at low RPM.
  • Fuel economy drops noticeably and the engine may stall at stops as cam timing sits in the wrong position for the current load.
  • On start-up, a rattling sound from the top of the engine can appear if the cam phaser cannot hold the commanded position.

Common causes

  • A stuck or clogged variable valve timing (VVT) oil control solenoid on bank 1, often from sludged or overdue engine oil.
  • A worn or seized bank 1 intake camshaft phaser (VCT actuator) that cannot rotate back to base timing.
  • Restricted oil passages, incorrect oil viscosity, or low oil level starving the phaser of hydraulic pressure.

What to do?

Confirm engine oil level, condition, and viscosity — dirty oil is the #1 cause of VVT faults. Command the intake solenoid on bank 1 with a scan tool and watch camshaft advance in live data. If the solenoid clicks but timing doesn't move, replace the phaser. If it doesn't click, replace the solenoid. Change oil to the manufacturer's recommended grade after any repair.
