C1217: OBD-II code C1217 means the ABS pump motor has shorted internally to ground, disabling ABS and often blowing the ABS main fuse on start-up.

HighChassisAnti-Lock Brakes (ABS)

Symptoms

  • The ABS, traction control, and stability control warning lamps are all illuminated together on the instrument cluster.
  • The ABS pump motor does not run during self-tests, and the ABS main fuse blows repeatedly on some vehicles.
  • Standard braking is unaffected but ABS intervention is unavailable, and the parking brake lamp may also flash on some models.

Common causes

  • An internal short to ground in the ABS pump motor windings is the most common cause and typically requires BPMV assembly replacement.
  • Chafed wiring between the EBCM and the pump motor, rubbing against the frame or brackets, can short the motor drive circuit.
  • A blown ABS fuse alone is a symptom, not a fix — the underlying pump motor short must be diagnosed and repaired first.

What to do?

Disconnect the ABS pump motor connector and measure resistance from each motor terminal to ground with a DMM — a reading close to 0 Ω confirms an internal short. Inspect the pump wiring harness for chafing against the frame. If the motor is shorted, the BPMV (Brake Pressure Modulator Valve) assembly that houses the motor must be replaced, then reprogrammed with a scan tool.
