P0741: OBD-II code P0741 flags that the torque converter clutch (TCC) has failed to lock up when commanded — the transmission can't achieve full converter lockup at cruise.
MediumPowertrainTransmission
Symptoms
- Check engine light is on; poor fuel economy at highway speeds from continuous converter slip.
- Higher engine RPM than normal at cruise for a given road speed — tachometer stays elevated in top gear.
- Transmission fluid may overheat from excessive slip, potentially damaging clutches long-term.
Common causes
- A failed TCC solenoid inside the valve body — the most common cause of this code.
- Contaminated transmission fluid or a worn valve body causing sticking solenoid operation.
- A worn torque converter itself, particularly on high-mileage vehicles with poor fluid maintenance.
What to do?
Change transmission fluid and filter first — a cheap fix that resolves many cases. Read live TCC command and slip during a road test. Replace the TCC solenoid, valve body, or torque converter as further diagnostics indicate.
