P0442: Evaporative Emission Control System Small Leak Detected

Symptoms

• Check engine light
• Occasional faint fuel odor
• No impact on driving

Common causes

• Loose or worn fuel cap
• Small crack in an EVAP hose
• Faulty purge valve or vent solenoid
• Damaged O-ring on the fuel filler neck

What to do?

Try tightening or replacing the fuel cap first - this clears the code on a surprising number of vehicles. If it returns within a few drive cycles, have a shop smoke-test the EVAP system to pinpoint the leak.
