C1286: OBD-II code C1286 flags an out-of-range bias on the steering angle sensor — the sensor's stationary-centred reading is drifting beyond acceptable limits.

MediumChassisStability Control (VSES)

Symptoms

  • ABS and stability control warning lamps illuminate together and stay on continuously after start.
  • Stability control interventions are disabled because the EBCM does not trust the steering-angle reference.
  • Standard driving feels normal; the fault only shows up in scan data or by way of the illuminated ESC lamp.

Common causes

  • A steering angle sensor that has lost its calibrated zero and no longer reads correctly when the wheels are centred.
  • Wheel alignment or ride-height out of specification biasing the sensor's centred position.
  • An internally failing sensor with wear or contamination producing a biased output signal.

What to do?

Point the front wheels straight ahead and verify the steering wheel is centred. Perform the steering-angle sensor zero-point calibration with a scan tool. Verify wheel alignment. If the code returns after calibration and alignment, replace the sensor and recalibrate.
