C1232: OBD-II code C1232 flags an open or shorted left front wheel speed sensor circuit — the EBCM detects an electrical fault, not just a missing signal.
HighChassisAnti-Lock Brakes (ABS)
Symptoms
- The ABS, traction control, and stability control warning lamps illuminate together, typically as soon as the ignition is switched on rather than only while moving.
- The code sets during the EBCM's power-on self-test because the electrical fault is present even at zero speed.
- Anti-lock braking, traction control, and stability interventions are all disabled while the fault is active.
Common causes
- An open circuit in the left front wheel speed sensor — often caused by a broken internal winding or damaged sensor wire — is the most common cause.
- A short to ground or a short to voltage on the sensor signal wires, usually from chafed wiring at the strut or corroded connector pins.
- A completely failed sensor, or on some vehicles a rusted or missing tone ring, that prevents any signal from reaching the EBCM.
What to do?
With the ignition off, disconnect the left front wheel speed sensor and measure resistance across its pins with a DMM — most passive sensors read 800-2,000 Ω. Test the sensor wires for continuity back to the EBCM and check for shorts to ground and to battery voltage. Inspect the harness at the strut for chafing and the connector for corrosion. Replace the sensor and repair wiring as needed.
