C1251: OBD-II code C1251 flags a generic malfunction in the Real-Time Damping / Road Sensing Suspension (RSS) system — adaptive damper control has been disabled.
MediumChassisReal-Time Damping (RSS)
Symptoms
- The 'Service Ride Control' or similar suspension warning message illuminates on the dashboard.
- Damper control reverts to a fixed default level; the ride may feel harsher, softer, or less controlled than normal.
- Handling in body-roll and pitch scenarios can feel less composed because adaptive damping is inactive.
Common causes
- A failed component in the RSS system — damper actuator, position sensor, accelerometer, or the RSS control module itself.
- Damaged wiring or a corroded connector along the RSS harness at any of the four corners of the vehicle.
- Loss of communication between the RSS module and the EBCM/PCM on the serial data bus.
What to do?
Read all RSS-specific sub-codes with a capable scan tool — C1251 is often a companion code to a more specific fault like C1710-C1727. Address the specific sub-code first. Check RSS module power, ground, and bus communication. Clear C1251 and retest only after the underlying fault is repaired.
